Day Six

I went to practice at 7:30AM this morning. Man, the soreness from yesterday (and days prior, I'm sure) finally set in. It was very difficult to hold some of the postures. I also was having some problems keeping my breathing steady so I had to sit down a few times. I got some tips from the instructor on one of the postures that I was struggling with so I am excited to try it again tomorrow.

Being sore, for me, is kind of like a sign that I've finally done something right. Of course, there is good sore and bad bad sore. I think you are probably finding out that the good sore is.. good! The important thing is not to run from the soreness but to embrace it as part of the process. The room will always feel better than a cold couch when your body aches. I have found that even when I am the most sore after a demanding class or a double, the room is still the BEST place for me to be. You might try the steam room sometime before class if you haven't already. I find that when I am achy and sore, the steam room can loosen and open me up before class.

I wrote this in reply to your comment on my blog, but I wanted to say it here too. Cynthia Wehr often said this and I believe her. Through your breath, hard work, and determination - your postures will find you. I firmly believe yoga has nothing to do with luck; only practice, discipline, and commitment. You just started this journey and you will find that as you go things will change. Days will come when you no longer want to practice. If you can learn to embrace the feelings for what they are, you will always find solace on the mat. I wish you a beautiful journey with Bikram yoga and I look forward to meeting you face to face very soon.

Blessings and Namaste
